If there’s something we never get tired of seeing, it’s a great makeover. Whether it’s transforming a retro bathroom into a modern oasis or giving a lackluster bedroom a fresh look, pros perform these design miracles all the time.
To give designers a chance to showcase their favorite makeovers—and to bring you plenty of inspiration for your own home—we’re sharing the best before and afters we’ve seen in our series, Makeover of the Week. Take notes for your next renovation.
"My clients, while looking for their dream home, came upon this 1960’s Colonial whose vintage kitchen was original to the house and in need of major updating," interior designer Linda Granert says. "When the fifty-year-old oven broke, they kicked their renovation project timeline into high gear."

"The kitchen was literally stuck in a '60s moment with its fruit-patterned wallpaper, maple cabinetry, formica counter tops, original appliances, and linoleum floor," notes Granert. "I needed to make it more functional for this active and young family.”

“We met our goal of creating a family-friendly, open, and fun kitchen space that blends traditional and modern elements, while providing a layout that would be the envy of any cooking enthusiast,” says Granert.
What Changed:
- Color theme: Soft hues of gray were paired with bright pops of color to complement all the traditional and modern elements in the room.
- Cabinets: White shaker-styled custom cabinetry was selected for its clean lines and modern appeal.
- Cabinet hardware: Simple yet elegant brushed nickel hardware plays off the gray tones in the room.
- Countertops: Black soapstone countertops help break up the white cabinetry and island.
- Island stools: Bright orange counter stools, made of reclaimed materials, add a bright pop of color to the room.
- Center island: The island, with its mini sink, provides storage and a spot for the family to gather.
- Floor: Extra-wide 5 ½” wide oak stained reclaimed wood floors add warmth to the space.
- Pendants: Bell-shaped lights feature seeded glass and brushed nickel and set an intimate tone when entertaining.
- Backsplash: A gray-hued Carrara marble subway backsplash tile complements the dark countertops.
- Window treatments: Woven wood shades add texture and warmth to the room while providing privacy.
- Kitchen table: The tulip-style table, with its cast-aluminum base and a solid marble top, combines fancy with fun.
- Kitchen chairs: Soft gray plastic chairs are easy to move and clean.
- Light over table: The crystals in the center of the metal sphere add a little bling to the decor.
