What sets rattan apart from its cousins—think bamboo, cane, and seagrass—is its flexibility and built-in strength. Derived from the tough inner core of the rattan plant, the material spiked in popularity in the early 1800s when it was used to create wicker furniture. Centuries later, rattan continues to be a crowd pleaser.
Urban Outfitters could barely keep up with demand when it introduced its Marte furniture line last year, and Serena and Lily consistently creates the rattan seating of our patio dreams. West Elm, Restoration Hardware, and Pottery Barn have all added their own spin, but few brands can match IKEA’s prices.
Renewable, and often used as a replacement for wood, rattan feeds into IKEA’s increasing focus on sustainability. If the 2020 catalog is any indication, we can expect many more stylish statement pieces in our future. Here’s what we’re currently coveting.
BUSKBO Armchair
A new addition to the IKEA catalog, this beauty reminds us of Urban Outfitter’s Marte Lounge Chair, but comes in at half the price. Pair two together or style alongside the popular MASTHOLMEN loveseat and table for a matching conversation set.
ULRIKSBERG Armchair
Another newcomer, this chair, evokes more of a mid-century modern feel with its angled seat, black accents, and wrapped armrests. This stylish piece will also develop more character over time.
NILSOVE Armchair
This breezy chair belongs in a beach house, but even if there’s no sand in sight, you’ll be able to make the most of long dinners with its specially designed armrests and supportive seat. Throw in the NORNA chair pad for added comfort.
GAMLEHULT Ottoman
It’s a foot rest, stool, side table, and storage piece all in one. It’s just what you need if you live in a small space (or even if you don’t).
SNIDAD Basket
You can count on this braided basket to corral blankets and magazines in the living room or serve as a hamper or towel holder in the bathroom. The handles make it easy to transport.
LUBBAN Serving Cart
Is it just us, or does this little cart feel like it was made for a Nancy Meyers’ movie? It’s the perfect blend of casual, sophisticated, and practical. Bonus: The metal top is removable and easy to clean.
STENBÄR Plant Pot
This planter is a breath of fresh air with its dual tones, interesting shape, and multiple weaving techniques.
DELAKTIG Headboard
Pictured here with the accompanying bed frame, this textured headboard jives with a variety of styles, from boho to glam. Take it a step further with built-in side tables.
