Admit it: you have a love-hate relationship with TikTok. It’s okay, you’re not alone. Though we spend far more time on the app than we’d like to admit—so much so that it’s single-handedly responsible for those unproductive days—we have to admit we’ve learned a thing or two from it. That’s right, we’re talking about dance challenges, mouth-watering recipes, and, of course, a few home hacks here and there.

But, as you scroll through IKEA hauls and DIY projects, have you ever wondered what the design industry thinks of these popular videos? Sure, anyone can have a beautiful home, however, we can always rely on the professionals to give us the good, the bad, and the ugly of any emerging trend.

To help make your time on the app more productive—yes, it is possible—we asked some of our favorite designers to share their favorite home décor TikToks. While the list below runs the gamut from stunning renovation projects to historic home tours, one thing’s for sure: the app certainly has the design industry’s seal of approval.

Beautify Builder Grade Doors

“While most of the viral TikTok design trends leave a lot to be desired—I’m looking at you resin countertops—there is one which has merit. Here, the homeowner upgrades a boring contractor-grade hollow core door into something far more interesting. With the use of some lumber, paint, and a lot of ingenuity, she transformed the doors into a unique and photo-worthy end result. This is one TikTok design hack a homeowner won’t regret months down the road.” —Kevin Isbell, designer

Room Renovation

“I actually love the garage/home gym conversion. I mean a real, well-designed home gym and wellness space that the whole family can use. I actually think this TikTok trend is one I could easily see getting designer approval. Families who live in colder climates would readily adopt this trend for the colder months.” —Joy Williams, designer

Stylish Shelves

“I also love the trend of having a real library with floor to ceiling shelves in the living room or dining room. I think that is definitely a designer-approved trend. As a designer, I'm actively plotting adopting this trend for my dining room, which hasn't gotten nearly enough use this year.” —Joy Williams, designer

Cottage Craze

“I think it is safe to say that the internet has become obsessed with cottages. Perhaps it’s our crave for comfort and our recently requited love for the traditional style that brought cottages to center stage.”—Karina Lameraner, creative stylist at Modsy

Historic House Tours

"Recently, I’ve been captivated by seeing historic homes on TikTok. One of my favorites is this tour inside one of the iconic Painted Ladies homes in San Francisco. Any glimpse inside of an old home is such a treat, however, when combined with educational voice-over, I can’t help but delve into a rabbit hole. I specifically love tours where we get to learn the individual function of random elements of the design and architecture.” —Karina Lameraner, creative stylist at Modsy

Comedic Relief

“Bluetooth speaker in the bathroom? Check. I love how this relatable video portrays all the random things that just don’t make sense. The ultimate in home satire.” —Heather Goerzen of Havenly Creative & Design
