We spend a huge portion of our lives in our bedrooms—whether we're sleeping, relaxing, or just enjoying a lazy Sunday. So, it only makes sense to devote some time and energy to making our bedrooms the perfect escape, whatever that means for you. Whether you love to keep your spaces dark and moody or light and bright, there's a bedroom design idea sure to suit your style.
According to Decorist designer Sharon Leigh Copeland, creating a dreamy retreat is as easy as one, two, three.
"Making a bedroom relaxing and cozy takes three things: color, layers, and light," Copeland tells MyDomaine. "Cool grays, dreamy blues, and even luxurious lavender set the tone for blissful sleep and romance."
Making a bedroom relaxing and cozy takes three things: color, layers, and light.
The other pieces of the puzzle include layered bedding and smart lighting.
"Layers are important because when you are in your bed, you want to feel the weight of a good pillow and softness of good bedding," Copeland explains. "Italian sheets, a soft duvet, and a textured accent throw really help you fall asleep. Layers of light are also important in any room. You need task light for reading, ceiling light for overall everyday light, and ambient light for those times you want to set the mood."

Get Creative With Paint
Who needs a statement headboard when you can DIY one with paint? Designer Julie Rose painted the bottom half of her bedroom walls with Farrow & Ball’s Breakfast Room Green paint to create the illusion of a headboard for way less. The thin line of black paint between the green and white walls helps divide the room—a big impact for a small cost.
Try an Accent Wall
The team at Gray Space Interior Design gave a black and white bedroom additional interest with a stunning accent wall. The simple wallpaper backdrop creates an instant focal point for the room.
Mix Patterns
Don't be afraid to mix and match different patterns like Casa Watkins Living. The mudcloth pattern on the duvet cover blends seamlessly with the woodblock stamp motif on the Euro shams.
Not sure where to start? A good rule of thumb is to mix smaller patterns like gingham, herringbone, or a thin stripe with larger patterns like paisley or a large plaid.
Play With Primary Colors
Take a cue from Maite Granada and follow the color wheel. Primary colors (blue, yellow, red) are a great starting point for your design. Granada uses blue and yellow to create a colorful bedroom that still gives off relaxing vibes.
Embrace the Undone
The messy bed look isn't going away anytime soon. This bedroom by Bespoke Only leans into the perfectly undone look. Layer a fluffy duvet with a lightweight textured linen throw for a relaxed vibe that will have you ready to crawl back into bed.
Double Up
When decorating a bedroom, sometimes two is better than one. This room, designed by Deena Knight Designs, includes matching black iron twin beds and fringed stools, perfect for a kid's room or a guest room.
Add Greenery
The secret to a relaxing night's sleep? Plenty of plants. Sara Toufali from Black and Blooms filled her bedroom with snake plants and pothos plants, filling the space with life and color. Be sure to choose plants based on the amount of light your bedroom receives.
Use Soothing Earth Tones
Terracotta is having a major moment. Cathie Hong Interiors filled this bedroom with calming tones reminiscent of Earth's beauty. If you love the look of an all-white bedroom but crave more color, this is the next best thing.
Choose a Statement Bed
Need an instant statement? Look no further than your bed frame. Katie Hodges Design chose this linen bed with clean lines to anchor the room. From a jewel-toned velvet headboard to a four-poster frame, investing in a bed adds luxury to any space.
Add Personality to Rentals
Decorist designer, Baylee Floyd of Baylee Deyon Design designed this room for a beauty blogger in California. Just because it was a rental doesn't mean it couldn't feel like home.
"Clean white linens on the bed make for a bright and airy feel," Deyon explains. "Greenery brings in color and life. Lastly, the pink velvet bench at the end of the bed is both functional and stately."
Try On Some Jewel Tones
Nothing says luxury like jewel tones. Decorist designer Carmen René Smith created a maximalist haven for her client.
"Freedom, fearlessness, and limitless fun are just a few words that come to mind when I admire it," Smith says. "The jewel tones, pattern, and ode to art history give me maximalist butterflies! I loved layering patterns, colors, and design styles to create an eclectic fantasy for my very cool, very talented tattoo artist client."

Don't Limit Yourself to One Layout
There are no hard and fast rules when laying out a bedroom. This bed fits perfectly between two windows, letting in so much light.
"I love the classy suit-stripe motorized roman shades, too," Decorist designer Luz Perez Brown of Willow and Jax says. "With the touch of a button, the shades rise in the morning and flood the room with beautiful natural light."
Use Art as Inspo
Not sure which colors to use as accents? Look to your art. Designer Laquita Tate of Laquita Tate Interior Styling and Designs used this gorgeous piece of artwork to draw in accent shades like teal and orange.
Create a Cozy Reading Nook
Every bookworm needs a dedicated reading spot. Follow Tate's lead and fill a corner of your bedroom with a cozy chair, adjustable light, and artwork.
Go Easy On Wall Decor
Decorist design team Forbes + Masters created this eclectic primary bedroom suite. "She is an avid reader, so instead of doing typical built-ins, we opted for a more sculptural bookcase," the duo explains. "We wanted to focus on the texture of the Thibaut wallpaper, the Luke Lamp Co sconces, and the Ben & Aja Blanc fringed half moon mirror."
Primary Bedroom
The term “Primary Bedroom” is now widely used to describe the largest bedroom in the home, as it better reflects the space’s purpose. Many realtors, architects, interior designers, and the Real Estate Standards Association have recognized the potentially discriminatory connotations in the term “Master.” Read more about our Diversity and Inclusion Pledge.
Keep It Uncluttered
Organization is key to a zen bedroom. Cathie Hong Interiors only keeps the necessities on this side table. When everything is in its rightful place, you'll be able to rest easy.
Try Some Farmhouse Details
Modern farmhouse style can work anywhere. Becca Interiors designed this classic bedroom for a home in trendy Dumbo Brooklyn. White brick walls meet a sweetly striped quilt and painted wood dresser in an instantly cozy space.
Pile on the Pillows
It's a no-brainer; the more pillows on the bed, the cozier it is. Maegan Blau of Blue Copper Design added bohemian throws to this bed for a relaxed and easygoing vibe.
Invest in a Luxe Headboard
A statement headboard makes a difference, even in the tiniest of bedrooms. This luxe green velvet headboard instantly elevates the small apartment bedroom, which was designed by House 9.
Be Smart About Lighting
Save room on your nightstand by skipping the lamp and installing a sconce light instead. Designer Katie Martinez chose this adjustable reading light for this Nantucket stunner. Plus, you won't have to leave your bed to turn off the light at night.
Invest in Clever Storage
Bedrooms need storage solutions too. Light and Dwell chose this oversized nightstand that features a shelf and drawer underneath, perfect for keeping books, hand cream, and any other trinkets.
Add a Pendant Lamp
Install a hanging light to bring some texture into the space. Pure Salt Interiors chose a rattan pendant for a splash of beachy vibes in this laid-back abode.
Consider Complementary Colors
Look to the color wheel for design inspiration. Complementary colors (think: blue and orange) sit opposite each other on the color wheel and never fail when paired together. Designer Yael Weiss added interest to this cozy bedroom by playing off the blue accents with rust-colored details.
Add Extra Seating
Nothing says luxury like extra seating in the bedroom, which you can use as a place to read, or connect with your partner, or just as a spot to sit and put on your shoes in the morning. Designer Whittney Parkinson added matching ottomans to the foot of the bed, and we can't wait to copy this in our own rooms.
Get Creative with Nightstands
Who says a nightstand has to be, well, a nightstand? Arbor & Co. used a stool here instead, but a stack of books or even a chair can get the job done, too.
If you're looking to redecorate without spending much money, repurpose furniture or artwork from other parts of your home to bring a whole new look to your bedroom. An old kitchen stool can double as a nightstand, while the art from your living room can become a focal point in your bedroom.
Add a Leaning Ladder
If you're looking for storage that also looks lovely, look no further than the leaning ladder. It can corral extra throws and linens while feeling more like décor than an organizing tool. Calimia Home used this one to keep a straw hat and a bathrobe handy.
Be Smart With Rug Size
One size does not fit all when it comes to rugs. If you want the carpet to fall under the bed and the surrounding furniture, a 9x12 rug is ideal for a king or queen bed setup. If you only want two-thirds of the bed on the rug as seen above, consider an 8x10 rug.
Add Luxe Details
When choosing furniture, don't overlook the details. In this bedroom by Desiree Burns Interiors, the modern nightstand feels extra special thanks to small brass accents. Don't feel like you have to match all metals you use in the bedroom either—mixing and matching is in.
Mix Design Styles
The eclectic style is all about combining designs from different eras. In this bedroom, Burns mixed a bed with a delicate cane headboard with a mid-century modern side table. Research different eras that you admire, and mix and match elements until you find a combination that you love.
Commit to a Color Scheme
If you're not sure where to start in your bedroom, choosing a color palette will help guide the rest of your decisions. Erin Williamson Design stuck with a pretty pink, cream, and tan base for this bedroom.
Think About Symmetry
Symmetry can be so soothing to the eye. Gail Davis Designs laid out this bedroom almost perfectly symmetrically with matching lamps, mirrors, and chairs. Yet, she left some room for surprises with the different bedside tables.
Choose Meaningful Knickknacks
If you have more maximalist tendencies, curating a few knickknacks to keep on your bedside table can bring a small dose of minimalism and organization to your space without forcing you to abandon your design style completely. In this example, Home By Polly added leaning art, a crystal, and some dried pampas grass to her night table for a personalized touch.
Decorate in Groups of Three
Don't want to spend lots of money on big statement art? You don't have to. Follow Jessica Nelson Design's lead and group three small pieces above the bed for a vintage moment. Look for unique pieces at flea markets, yard sales, or local consignment stores and frame them yourself for one-of-a-kind pieces.
Let the Light In
While we prefer darkness to sleep, letting natural light in the bedroom in the mornings can help us wake up more easily. Hang breezy curtains like these used by Katie Hodges Design to make sure your bedroom gets plenty of light.
Embrace Textured Walls
Though you may never want to hear the word "shiplap" again, we're here to tell you that wood accent walls are still very cool. They add texture and interest without the need for bold color. Take a cue from Light & Dwell and modernize shiplap with earthy tones and rustic textures.
Layer on Bedding
For a truly cozy bedroom, you need layers and layers of bedding. Finding Lovely uses a duvet and two patterned blankets to make her bedroom a comfortable hideaway.
Designate Spaces
If your bedroom also doubles as your workspace, make sure to designate a work area aside from your bed (we know it's tempting to work there). Katie Hodges Design set up a small corner desk with plenty of storage and natural light, plus an oversized chair great for video calls.
Embrace Hanging Shelves
For organization-meets-decor, look no further than the floating shelf. Use it to display knickknacks, greenery, or your favorite reads like Dazey Den did. Or use them as nightstands instead.
Consider a Warm Palette
If you want your bedroom to feel welcoming and homey, a warm palette might be the answer. Colors like pink, red, yellow, and orange bring out happiness, positivity, and energy, all useful vibes to experience first thing in the morning. If those aren't your favorite colors, consider adding a few touches of the palette, as Katie Hackworth Design has done here, to bring about the same effect.
Hang a Gallery Wall
We know we've told you this before, but a gallery wall, like this one from William Hunter Collective, is an easy way to show off your personality and style, even in the bedroom. For a fresher take on this trend, mix in other objects instead of just artwork—like hanging baskets or records—for extra texture and interest.
Add Some Color
Yes, bedrooms should be zen and calming, but that doesn't mean they have to be all-white. Follow designer Emily Henderson's lead and mix in some color to your space in the form of textiles or furniture.
Paint It All
We love an accent wall, but sometimes it's more fun to go all in. Lucy Gleeson Interiors painted her entire bedroom (even the shelves!) this moody teal shade, and the space is a stunner. Charlotte Cosby, head of creative at Farrow & Ball, recommends painting moodier shades in north-facing rooms, to play off the natural lack of light.
Go Back to Basics
Trad is back. Grandmillennial style celebrates traditional style including toile, pleated lampshades, ruffled linens, needlepoint pillows, and of course, chintz. Studio Peake mixed in touches of traditional style from the headboard to the lampshade for a fresh take on a timeless trend.
Create a Focal Point
Every room needs a focal point. In this instance, it's the extended headboard by Studio Peake, though the stunning orange curtains are a close second. In a bedroom, a statement bed or piece of artwork lends itself to drawing attention.
Go Black and White
Looking for a no-fail combination? You can't go wrong with a black-and-white bedroom. In order for it to feel fresh, follow Proem Studio's lead and mix different textures and shapes since you're limited on your color palette.
Use Mirrors to Enlarge the Room
It's an old design trick; hanging (or leaning) a few mirrors around the room reflects light and makes the room feel larger. In this moody design by Royal Roulotte, a leaning mirror helps a dark room feel spacious.
Add Some Stripes
When in doubt, throw in some stripes. Patterns can be difficult to mix and match but stripes are essentially fail-proof. Sarah Fultz Interiors mixes a tightly lined lumbar pillow with an easygoing striped throw for an easy-to-imitate combination.
Mix Materials
To make any room seem professionally decorated, mixing textiles is a must. Becca Interiors begins with a linen headboard then layers on velvet pillows for softness and a rougher textile for added interest.
Invest in Roman Shades
When looking for window treatments, Roman shades are a classy option that makes any room feel special. Katie Martinez Design kept her window treatments all-white for a soothing room that lets plenty of light in when needed.
