We spend a huge portion of our lives in our bedrooms—whether we're sleeping, relaxing, or just enjoying a lazy Sunday. So, it only makes sense to devote some time and energy to making our bedrooms the perfect escape, whatever that means for you. Whether you love to keep your spaces dark and moody or light and bright, there's a bedroom design idea sure to suit your style.

According to Decorist designer Sharon Leigh Copeland, creating a dreamy retreat is as easy as one, two, three.

"Making a bedroom relaxing and cozy takes three things: color, layers, and light," Copeland tells MyDomaine. "Cool grays, dreamy blues, and even luxurious lavender set the tone for blissful sleep and romance."

Making a bedroom relaxing and cozy takes three things: color, layers, and light.

The other pieces of the puzzle include layered bedding and smart lighting.

"Layers are important because when you are in your bed, you want to feel the weight of a good pillow and softness of good bedding," Copeland explains. "Italian sheets, a soft duvet, and a textured accent throw really help you fall asleep. Layers of light are also important in any room. You need task light for reading, ceiling light for overall everyday light, and ambient light for those times you want to set the mood."
