Inside a Serene, Inviting Home That Will Make You Want to Kick Off Your Shoes

Decorating a home can take years, but when interior designer Alison Davin of Jute Home was tasked with reimagining this stunning home in California, she had a much tighter timeframe—10 weeks, to be exact. "The biggest challenge was timing. We had 10 weeks from purchase time to install, including construction!" she tells MyDomaine. "The client purchased it last summer and wanted it ready for the Thanksgiving holidays." It's a brief that would make even the most experienced interior designer nervous, but Davin and her team leaned into the challenge.

The five-bedroom, five-bathroom traditional home in Ross, California is the perfect family space. It has a playroom, gym, formal entertaining room, and family room, yet it feels cozy and inviting. "It's a family space that's great for entertaining," she says.

Davin's directive was to create an inviting, cozy home that was perfect for family life and entertaining, so she looked to the owners to define the overall aesthetic. She describes their style as "tailored and casual at the same time"—two words that certainly encapsulate the finished design. The owner prefers a pared-down color palette, so Davin opted for a neutral base, enriched with textural finds and the odd burst of forget-me-not blue. 

The original home had excellent bones but needed cosmetic work. "It is an old home that was renovated about 10 years ago by a previous owner," says Davin. "We came in and did a cosmetic renovation," which included new flooring, lighting, updating hardware, renovating the fireplace, and giving each room a fresh lick of paint. 

When asked about her favorite part of the home, Davin responds with certainty: "the light. The whole home has great light and feels open and airy yet cozy at the same time," she says. That's certainly true of this banquette area, dubbed the "sunroom," which has sheer blinds to filter the warm California rays. Blue throw pillows by Jennifer Shorto add a burst of color to the otherwise neutral space. 

The owner is an avid art collector, so Davin was able to use these existing pieces to anchor each room and guide the overall design. "She is growing an impressive collection for this home [and] is still adding to it as we speak," she says. In the hallway, an expansive Richard Misrach photo sourced by Lindenbaum Art Advisory creates a soothing, serene vignette.

Both the primary bedroom and bunk room have been carefully curated with the family in mind. In the bunk room, patterned wallpaper, a polka-dot armchair, and blue linens create an energetic, playful space.

The primary bedroom, on the other hand, is a serene escape. Picture oak bedside tables, sage bed linens, and a woven hanging fixture that casts a warm glow. This is one home we'd never want to leave.
