I Can't Get Enough Of the Mediterranean-Inspired Stoneware Jar Trend

One of my favorite décor trends as of late? Terracotta and stoneware—and I know I’m not alone. You’ve likely swooned over these pieces while pouring over images of Athena Calderone’s dreamy home or scrolling through interior inspo on Instagram. Maybe you’ve even noticed the affordable pieces popping up at retailers such as Zara Home and Crate and Barrel. Personally, I can’t get enough.

I love terracotta pieces like these because they appear so storied and special—the more imperfect their design, the better. While I’m not normally one for weathered items, these vases are different. They add so much personality and charm to any vignette, and I can’t stop purchasing them.

They add so much personality and charm to any vignette, and I can’t stop purchasing them.

I’ve had the best luck searching for these finds on Facebook Marketplace or via vintage stores. The pieces that I’ve scored have been more reasonably priced and authentic-looking than some of the replicas sold for three or even four times the price online. Just note that oftentimes, terracotta vases are quite sizable and heavier than they appear—you’ll want to be prepared to transport one home without pulling a muscle.

While smaller terracotta jars make for fun vases and plant pots, larger sizes are excellent for jazzing up an empty corner or holding an oversized plant like a ficus tree. In my bedroom, I placed a beautiful, gigantic vintage ceramic planter beside my bed in lieu of an extra nightstand and can’t get enough of my new setup.

Designer blogger Jaci Hodge can’t get enough of such pieces herself. “The found terracotta vases have become so popular,” she says. “They are timeless. Incorporating a terracotta vase to a more modern space can add so much character and old-world charm to your home.”

And there’s no right or wrong way to display them, either. Whether your aesthetic leans transitional, boho, or minimalist, a stunning ceramic pot is sure to be a welcome addition. Notes Hodge, “I love that you can style them almost everywhere and the fact that they look great by themselves or filled with fresh or faux greenery.”
