Sustainability Isn't Just a Buzz Word—It's the Future of Design

The ease of fast fashion and overnight shipping has seeped into the design world in recent years, which means that purchasing items that align with short lived trends is easier than ever. But when it comes to the home, longevity and sustainability are where our focus should really be.

As our sister site Treehugger reported, 12.1 million tons of furniture and furnishings were thrown away in 2018. Our propensity to redecorate over and over again and purchase furniture made from shoddy materials is not only affecting our own homes, but the overflow at landfills as well.

But that's just scratching the surface of the issue. To quote our colleagues at Treehugger:

"Waste is just part of the problem. There are also unsustainable materials and supply chains; there is the exploitation of resources, pollution during manufacture, and packaging and shipping plights to consider, to name just a few of the issues."

Focusing on sustainability when it comes to interior design and decorating is one way we can make a real difference in the environment, which is easier said than done as fast furniture continues to rise in popularity.

Instead of seeking out décor and furnishings that last for years, move with us from home to home, and even get passed down through generations, shoppers these days tend to purchase cheaper pieces that come with a short lifespan.

However, a few simple changes in how we approach décor shopping and decorating in general can make a real difference. Purchasing wares from companies and makers with a focus on sustainability, shopping for second-hand or vintage pieces, and reworking or mending the pieces we already own are all great options.

That's why we've partnered with Treehugger to bring you the Treehugger x MyDomaine Eco-Décor Awards later in September.
