This San Francisco Penthouse is the Epitome of Apartment Goals

You would expect an apartment a few floors above the Instagram and Facebook headquarters to be, well, Instagrammable, but this 2,575 square foot penthouse at 181 Fremont in San Francisco is on another level. The pre-certified LEED Platinum luxury condominium tower is the first in San Francisco to earn that designation, and features a wrap-around observation terrace, two lounges (including one with a piano bar), fitness center with yoga room, catering kitchen, and conference room. This three-bedroom, three-and-a-half bathroom penthouse, designed by Mahsa Afsharpour, the founder of Saga Interiors, boasts sleek style and gorgeous views of the Bay Area.

"When walking into this penthouse, you turn the corner from the entryway and cannot help but notice the stunning landscape of San Francisco," Afsharpour says. "This penthouse's floor to ceiling glass windows overlooking the city give you a feeling of living amongst the clouds. My vision was to create a space that reflects an understated elegance that wouldn't take away from the surrounding views."

Since the building was built in 2018 and offers many luxuries, including Brazilian Macaubas quartzite countertops in the kitchen and heated floors of full-slab Lincoln Marble in the bathroom (um, sign me up please), Afsharpour focused on adding neutral colors, clean lines, textures, and arthouse-worthy light fixtures to add a touch of glam while making the space comfortable and accessible.

"Effortless luxury and elegance that flows throughout the penthouse and reflects the architecture and richness of the building was a top priority," Afsharpour said.

Afsharpour positioned the furniture so the floor-to-ceiling windows were always in view. "In the living room, space naturally competes with the surrounding views," Afsharpour said. "My intention was to create a timeless and elegant space without blocking or taking away from the beautiful views of the city."

A great tip for anyone (even those of us who thrive in our small space living!), is to keep your furniture's visual weight in mind. It will give the illusion of more space.

"The furniture pieces in this space are light and airy and allow you to almost see through them, even though they are significant in size and proportions," Afsharpour said.

What's a dining room without a standout light fixture? Afsharpour wanted a bold statement to pop against the oak sliding panels.

"The Taraxacum 88, an Italian industrial light fixture with 20 pressed and polished aluminum equilateral triangles fitted with electrical sockets, makes its presence known and ties the space together," Afsharpour said. "Each socket is filled with 60 globe lamps, invoking the bloom of a dandelion."

With such an open concept living area, entertaining will be a breeze. This built-in wet bar is perfect for whipping up cocktails or setting up a cheese board.

Ever wish you had time to clean up the kitchen before guests arrive? This kitchen can be hidden from view, thanks to a set of oak sliding panels. Though we can't imagine not having a place to stow our pots and pans in this sleek space.

This bedroom boasts another stunning light fixture as well as lots of texture to create a "welcoming, comfortable, and sophisticated safe-haven." Afsharpour also added a wall covering behind the headboard to add a touch of color, pattern, and interest to the space.

This kid's bedroom is space-themed without going overboard. The muted wallpaper and décor pieces are things that can grow up as they do.

This dreamy primary bathroom needed little design help, according to Afsharpour, as it came with full-height Arabescato Corchia marble walls (plus those heated floors we mentioned earlier). It's also equipped with soaking tubs with a separate shower and dual vanities.

"The primary bath was already a masterpiece when I first walked into the space,"Afsharpour said. "The floor and walls are adorned in full slabs of marble with a stand-alone bath tub facing the breathtaking San Fransisco Skyline. It couldn’t get much dreamier than this." 

The client requested a vanity space so Afsharpour went to work, creating a feminine make-up space complete with a custom mirror.

"The lighting in the mirror can be adjusted to reflect various types of desired lighting for the perfect make-up application," Afsharpour said. Dreams do come true!

No matter where she's designing, Afsharpour is passionate about bringing the client's wants and needs to life.
