Striking Blue Cabinetry Is Just the Beginning in This Quaint North Carolina Home

Decorating an open floor plan home comes with its own set of unique challenges. The lack of distinct spaces separated by walls can make distinguishing between rooms rather difficult. However, House of Nomad, a North Carolina–based design firm led by the insanely talented Kelley Lentini and Berkeley Minkhorst, was more than up to the task when it came to furnishing this lakeside townhome in Davidson, North Carolina.

Home to a young family of three that loves to entertain, each space needed to be both stylish and personal—not to mention kid-friendly. "A functional design was of the utmost importance," interior designers Lentini and Minkhorst told MyDomaine. "We wanted to pull out designs that were as trendy and timeless as they are." As you'll see below, the design duo certainly succeeded in curating a modern, eclectic home that's filled with classic small-town charm.

"The kitchen has a modern vibe with oversize pendants hung over a rich navy island with brass hardware," explained design duo Lentini and Minkhorst of the striking space. "Because of our clients' love for hosting their big family in the Charlotte area, our designs needed to incorporate as much seating as possible and be kid-friendly."

"The couple has a lovely, open-door policy with their extended local family, so our goal was to maximize space for hosting," the designers told MyDomaine. Complete with marble countertops, leather barstools, and navy cabinetry, the result is a cool, relaxed space with a modern vibe that’s bright and welcoming.

Navigating the home's long, narrow, open floor plan presented the biggest design challenge, confessed Lentini and Minkhorst. "Our clients' priority to maximize seating while also having an intimate space that felt cohesive for their family of three was tricky," they explained. Opting for space-saving furnishings, such as a round dining table, helped the designers fulfill their clients' vision.

The home's open floor plan also influenced the interior designers' furnishing choices in the living room. "We launched from the navy kitchen island and balanced that with a set of navy sofas," they explained. "We added warmth with natural elements, layering in the hide rug, baskets, and footed side tables, then mixed in visual depth with the emerald velvet pillows and plants."

"It was all about scale in this space," the designers confessed. "We measured and measured again, making sure the items would not just fit but create the look our clients wanted," they added. "The skinny coffee table was a challenge to source but provides the exact size and vibe required by the room."

However, the designers' greatest finds were blue sofas. "We love the sofas' bench cushions because they lend the space a modern vibe and don't chop up seating," they explained. "They're custom, stylish, and the perfect size—large enough for entertaining but cozy enough for family nights in," the duo offered. Perhaps most importantly, "The navy fabric is not only kid-friendly but also gives an immediate, visual depth to the room," they added.

The couple’s young daughter's bedroom is a playful take on the modern-boho flair found in the living room, explained the designers. "The best design find was the Justina Blakeney tassel wall pendant," the designers confessed. "It adds texture and a fun, visual element to the space," they explained. "We were really excited to design outside of the idea of a table lamp and to incorporate lighting that’s also an art piece."

"The Anthropologie mural inspired her entire space," revealed Lentini and Minkhorst. "It’s playful and trendy, and when her face lit up during our presentation as she caught a glimpse of it, we were thrilled—that's why we do what we do!"
