Everyone dreams of a great vacation spot, a home-away-from-home with plenty of sunshine and a warm breeze. Though most of us only get to visit places like Palm Springs, those lucky enough to have a second home there can enjoy the benefits each weekend.

This gorgeous 4,000 square foot home, designed by Aly Morford and Leigh Lincoln of Pure Salt Interiors, sits on a golf course in the little haven of Indian Wells in Palm Springs, California. The three bedroom, three and a half bathroom home is a new build, though the influence is distinctly Mediterranean, with shingled roofs and plenty of ceramic tile.

Meet the Expert

Aly Morford and Leigh Lincoln are the design duo (and best friends) behind Newport Beach design studio, Pure Salt Interiors. Since they opened in 2015, they have been honing their California coastal aesthetic, working with celebrity clients like Lauren Conrad and Caelynn Miller.

"Our goal from a design perspective was to blend the Pure Salt aesthetic — which is coastal, calm, and clean —with both the Mediterranean architecture and the retro, modern vibe often found in the area," Morford explains. "We did this by using a lot of natural elements, as well as textures and a neutral color palette with shades of greens and browns.”

While the home aligns perfectly with the Pure Salt vibe, the designers were able to have fun with the space too.

"Because this is a second home, we could be a bit more colorful and creative with the space, and not worry about the owners tiring of it," Lincoln adds. "We used playful wallpaper patterns in the bathrooms, and dramatic furniture and lighting pieces throughout. We felt we could make bigger statements in a weekend home."

Blending the Pure Salt coastal design style with the desert feel of Palm Springs was a main goal of this project.

“The Pure Salt aesthetic is relaxed, comfortable, functional, and always clean and simple," Morford says. "We love layered neutrals and natural textures with a fresh palette as the backdrop. Leigh and I both grew up in California, and that has really inspired our look. Our designs are coastal-inspired with natural elements. We also both have families, so we are always thinking about the functionality of a space — how it will actually be used — and want everything to really work well for the people who live there, in addition to looking beautiful."

While the color palette remains calm and muted throughout this home, there are plenty of statement pieces that catch the eye like these textured accent chairs in the living room.

"We believe strongly in bringing life into our spaces via nature, whether that's natural fibers, plants, beads, decor — it’s always part of our approach," Lincoln says. "We never stop seeking inspiration. We’re always looking for new ideas to incorporate into our projects. As designers, we must feed the eye to maintain our creativity and deliver the best ideas and designs for our clients.”

The kitchen includes several on-trend moments from two-toned cabinets to open shelving and hanging pendants.

“Given that this is a vacation home, the owners wanted a sense of calm," Morford says. "They come here to unwind and to enjoy their favorite people and activities. Based on that input, we chose a neutral palette with lots of texture and natural elements."

The first piece Lincoln and Morford bought for the home was the live-edge, cream colored coffee table in the family room.

"The owners wanted to maximize seating for guests, so we made the decision that the space off the kitchen, which was meant as a dining room, would instead be the family room," Lincoln explains. "The coffee table really set the tone and made that area a unique space and a focal point.”

The guest bedroom offers a ton of natural light, a dramatic leather headboard, and plenty of textures from the rug to the nightstand.

“We always put a lot of thought and care into our projects, not just the look but also the function of the space," Morford says. "We think this home really hit the mark for accomplishing the owner’s objectives of having a weekend retreat where they could relax, entertain, and host friends and family.”

The kids' room offers a sophisticated take on bunk beds, perfect for guests and entertaining, which was important to the clients.

"Given the high volume of guests that come for dinner and stay for the weekend, the owners wanted to maximize sleeping space," the designers explain. "We opted for a twin-over-queen bunk bed and just enough whimsy in the wallpaper that it can work for kids and adults too."

The fun palm print wallpaper in the kids' bathroom is a nod to the retro aesthetic of Palm Springs while bringing some life and levity to the space.

“The best indoor spaces are those that incorporate the outdoors," Morford explains. "Before interiors, I was in floral design, and I know how a beautiful arrangement can transform a space and give it life. We always bring nature into our designs, from natural materials to foliage.”

The primary bedroom offers layer upon layer of texture and plenty of soothing neutral tones, but it's the lighting that the homeowners love most.

Primary Bedroom

The term “Primary Bedroom” is now widely used to describe the largest bedroom in the home, as it better reflects the space’s purpose. Many realtors, architects, interior designers, and the Real Estate Standards Association have recognized the potentially discriminatory connotations in the term “Master.” Read more about our Diversity and Inclusion Pledge.

“The lighting throughout the home really stands out and sets the tone for the home," the homeowners reveal. "Pure Salt sourced so many incredible statement fixtures that automatically capture your attention and start conversations."

The clients also can't get enough of the earthy bedding and rugs used in the home.

"The colors and organic textures really make each space pop and create that inviting and relaxed feeling we’ve always wanted,” they explain.

Lincoln's design philosophy is simple: Less is more. Her mantra is evident throughout the home including this this simple yet stunning primary bath.

"We create spaces that are comfortable and warm, but we want to create visual calm by not over-decorating,” she says.

"While the goal of this vacation home is to relax, play golf and enjoy time with loved ones, the owners still needed a small functional spot to work," the designers explain. "We created a work nook with great light to answer email and handle day-to-day tasks back at home."

This half bath offers plenty to look at from the textured grasscloth wallpaper to graphic tiles below.

"Powder baths are little jewel boxes and should be fun," Morford and Lincoln explain. "For this one, we used a nice floating vanity that maximized storage and minimized visual clutter. We adorned the walls with grasscloth that ties back to the floor, and an abundance of textural details."

While a vacation home should be a spot to relax and get away from the pressures of day-to-day life, the team at Pure Salt believes every home should be a place for calm.

"We really want to help people free themselves from clutter and distraction in order to enjoy all of life’s best moments," Morford explains. "That’s what we strive for in each project, including this Palm Springs home, and we think we nailed it.”
