I Just Can't Get Behind These 4 Instagram-Famous Home Trends

Accent Walls

I’ve actually never painted the walls in any of my rentals, so perhaps part of my hesitance to buy into this trend comes from the fear of having to return everything back to its original shade come move out. Logistics aside, I’m not totally opposed to one accent wall, but I’m not feeling multiple in an open-plan space, which is a style that I've seen more and more of on Instagram lately.

The result is a bit too busy for my personal taste, and it also can be difficult to make multiple DIY paint jobs look extremely well done. Instead, I’m all for mixing in other types of décor, such as oversized artwork or an eye-catching gallery wall. 

Platform Beds

Platform beds are everywhere these days, and while they’re definitely modern and chic, I prefer my mattress to be a bit higher off the ground with the addition of a box spring. As an apartment dweller, I also appreciate having the capability to store items under my bed as needed, whether that’s offseason clothing, wall décor I intend to keep but don’t currently want to display, or anything else you can think of. I have friends who swear that they’ll never stash things under their bed no matter what, but truthfully, I don’t think I’m quite as disciplined and really do rely on that space.

Lantern Pendants

I’m not saying you need to hang an ornate chandelier, or on the opposite end, ignore a rental’s ugly overhead light fixtures all together. However, I’m not feeling the trend of oversized lantern-type pieces as lamps.

I know that plenty of people love this look, but I prefer more of a transitional style and gravitate toward Serge Mouille-style pieces, which are still contemporary but not quite as “out there.” To me, lanterns are more meant for outdoor spaces, so if you and a housemate aren’t on the same page about this look, hanging a few on your patio could be a happy medium.

The Rumpled Sheets Look

By no means do I make my bed every single day, but when I do, I always prefer for it to look crisp and hotel-like as opposed to the laid back, rumpled style that I see all over my Instagram feed. Sure, this setup does look nice and inviting—and I love a good nap as much as anyone—but my space always feels a bit more clean and together when pillows are properly fluffed, sheets are tucked, and my duvet is nice and crisp.

I will say that I’m all about the all-white bedding trend, though, and love how refreshing it looks.
