“It can be easy to fall in love with one pattern or material and overdo it,” she says. “So if you love marble for example, maybe balance the marble with some burl wood to add warmth.”

If you ask us, mixing textures is the gift that keeps on giving. Not only does this design trick look nice, but it’ll also give your home a warm, welcoming feel. At the end of the day, isn't it all that really matters?

Create Controlled Clutter

Marie Kondo was right: Superfluous clutter brings nobody joy—especially those who are creating an Insta-friendly space. After all, would you double tap on a room filled with clutter? Keep your home photogenic at all times by tidying up. 

“Have a home and a place for everything,” Furlong says. “Controlled clutter is fine, but in general it’s not very Insta-worthy. Anything that I don’t want to be seen (or photographed) has a dedicated space for it to live.”

So how do you know what's controlled clutter and what's simply a mess? A great rule of thumb is thinking about what you want a new friend to see. A stack of artbooks may actually look pretty stylish, but that pile of bills or clump of dirty laundry? Yeah, not so much.

Take Your Time

We know, we know: In a world where instant gratification reigns supreme (we mean, we don't know what we’d do without our Prime memberships), taking your time on anything feels like Mission: Impossible. But if you want to create a Insta-friendly home that you love, slow and steady wins the race.

“Don’t just buy pieces to buy pieces,” Furlong says. “Fall in love with your belongings and acquire them slowly.”

She adds that she often fills her home with pieces that have a story.

“Everything reminds me of where I’ve been, where I come from, and how magical life really can be,” Furlong says. "Like a basket from a trip to Thailand with my sister or hand towels from my favorite hotel in New York City.”

Embrace Your Personal Style

Let's be honest: Most of us associate influencers with trends. After all, these Instagrammers always see to know the best new restaurants, hottest travel destinations, and coolest brands. But when it comes to decorating your home, Furlong says leaning too much into what’s trendy is actually one of the biggest mistakes you can make. 

“Take time to discover who you are and thus what your unique style is,” she says. “Your home will feel that much more special for it.”

Sure, we might see influencers fill their homes with curved furniture and dried pampas grass, but that doesn't mean you have to do the same. Instead, your home should be a reflection of your personal style. 

“My interior style is pretty mixed, lots of vintage meets new, different textures, subtle colors but loads of personality,” Furlong explains. “I wanted [my home] to feel like how I dress, and feel like it was a perfect extension of who I am, and a space that I always enjoy coming back to.”

After all, at the end of the day, the only thing that’s more impressive than your Insta-friendly space is creating a home you love.
