If there’s something we never get tired of seeing, it’s a great makeover. Whether it’s transforming a retro bathroom into a modern oasis or giving a lackluster bedroom a fresh look, pros perform these design miracles all the time.

To give designers a chance to showcase their favorite makeovers—and to bring you plenty of inspiration for your own home—we’re sharing the best before and afters we’ve seen in our series, Makeover of the Week. Take notes for your next renovation.

“I moved into this home last summer with a 3-month-old baby and a full-time work schedule," interior designer Jasmine Roth says. "The backyard was the last thing I felt like dealing with after coming home from full days of working construction at HGTV. Because the yard wasn’t finished, it didn’t feel like we had truly ‘moved in’. So, I thought what better time than now to redo it—right at the start of summer."

Before:

“I didn’t love that my backyard lacked a cozy and comfortable feel—and that it wasn’t functional," Roth says. "There was nowhere to set down a drink, no color, and no real character. Bottom line—the space was unfinished.”

“I was really going for a California casual feel—and that’s exactly how it turned out," Roth shares. "The new décor creates a relaxed and warm aesthetic. There are fun pops of color with all the yellows and pinks—but the neutral tones help tie everything together to make the style work all year long. My backyard is now the perfect mix of cozy and functional, and it’s really an extension of my indoor home."

What Changed:

  • Color theme: Mustard yellow, pops of pink, and neutral tones create a California casual vibe.
  • Couch: The pillow-filled, neutral-toned sectional coordinates with any type of décor and the worry-proof outdoor fabric can withstand bad weather.
  • Round tables: The nesting tables, with their mix of wood and wrought iron, add a unique design element to the space.
  • Stools: The wooden stools at the now usable bar provide extra seating and coordinate with the nesting tables.
  • Swings: The swinging egg chairs, with their all-weather cushions and pillows, provide fun along with extra seating.
  • Rug: The outdoor rug, with its subtle touch of blue, is weather-resistant and works to pull everything together.
  • Poufs: The multifunctional indoor/outdoor poufs create extra seating and a unique outdoor design element.
  • Table: The wrought iron tables make the space more functional by providing a place to hold drinks, food, or books.
  • Space heater: The heater’s sleek design works with the space and provides warmth on chilly California nights.
  • Plants: Faux plants add greenery but don’t need any maintenance.
