Stepping Inside This Brooklyn Home Feels Like a Tropical Vacation

Working as a New York City designer for her entire career, Megan Hopp felt well-equipped to take on the task of transforming Lindsay Silberman and Matt Stevens' Brooklyn apartment into a stylish yet practical space.

“Small space design goes hand-in-hand with typical New York City interior design,” Hopp says. “I am always thinking about how to optimize space, create storage, and craft a space that is comfortable yet functional.”

The pair are the founders and owners of Hotel Lobby Candle, as well as maintain an active social media presence. “These folks have a lot of experience with hotels and wanted to create a sort of nod to some of their favorite places and environments,” Hopp explains, noting that she designed each room to reflect a beloved hotel or travel location of the couple.

And because of the couple’s professions, the space had to serve double duty. “Part of the conversation at the start was creating a home that was comfortable, functional, but also would act as a backdrop for photography and creating content,” Hopp adds. 

Take a tour of the welcoming Williamsburg space that pays a nod to sunnier locales and is full of happy patterns and hues. 

“One of the reasons I was excited to work with Lindsay is that one glance at her Instagram gives you a very clear sense of her aesthetic,” Hopp says. “It’s colorful, lively, tropical, and chock-full of whimsy.” 

The inspo for the living room? The Miami Beach Edition Hotel. Hopp sought to design travel-themed spaces without being too literal.

“It’s always a goal to inject the client’s persona into a space," Hopp explains. "So, we landed on designs that were reminiscent of these spots, yet still were original and unique to the clients’ tastes and needs."

A Samsung Frame TV doubles as peppy artwork above the credenza, and the living room is Silberman’s favorite space in the apartment: “It feels like a super chic retreat that reminds me of a fancy hotel lobby,” she says. 

The second bedroom, which is a combination of office and guest rooms, serves many purposes. “We also wanted the room to really pack a punch in terms of an 'Instagramable background,'” Hopp explains. 

The eye-catching pink and green banana leaf wallpaper was chosen to evoke memories of the Beverly Hills Hotel. 

The couple largely furnished their space from scratch, but Hopp did work an existing frameless mirror into the design scheme.

“I thought the exaggerated shape would translate well up against the ultra-playful nature of the Pacifico palm wallpaper and neon sign,” she says. 

A glowing neon sign welcomes visitors into the joint guest room and office space. 

“The office is sort of a physical manifestation of Lindsay’s brand, and I love how the space pairs with all the other content she has and continues to create,” Hopp says. “We used a lot of pieces big and small from Jonathan Adler, one of my all-time favorite vendors, which is always a treat.” 

The couple's primary bedroom was designed to reflect their travels to Tulum. 

“I learned so much about mixing textures and materials, how to play with proportions, and how to maximize a small space efficiently,” Silberman says of her experience working with a designer. “Megan definitely elevated my aesthetic and eye for design.” 

“I think our home says that we’re a couple who loves to travel, a couple who likes classic, neutral design, yet we aren’t afraid to have a little fun,” Silberman continues. 

Oversized gold Tom Dixon Pendants shine in the kitchen, and chic neutrals pair nicely with pops of brass in the kitchen and entryway.
